Presentation at Joint Polar Satellite System Proving Ground and Risk Redution Program annual

During the FY2024 Joint Polar Satellite System Proving Ground and Risk Reduction Program Annual Review, Emily Berndt (ST11) presented an update on the project “Spatially and Temporally Enhanced NUCAPS Sounding Products for Emerging Applications”. The project is a collaboration between the NASA Short-term Prediction Research and Transition (SPoRT) Center and the JPSS PGRR Program. NASA/NOAA hyperspectral infrared soundings are processed through a trajectory model to expand the utility of these satellite observations for forecasting severe weather. A new science result published in Weather and Forecasting (Kahn et. al 2023) demonstrates that processing the data though trajectory modeling is more likely to predict convective initiation after 19 UTC then when having the satellite data alone.
