SERVIR Hosts University of Florida Professors and African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Fellow

Crop yield models play a part in bridging the gap between weather, climate and food security. To discuss such collaborations in West Africa, Jacob Abramowitz and Emil Cherrington organized a visit from Gerrit Hoogenboom and Vakhtang Shelia from the University of Florida (UF), along with Yacouba Ouedraogo, a fellow of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS). UF and AIMS are both part of the SERVIR West Africa consortium. AIMS is a pan-African network of Centres of Excellence for postgraduate training, research & public engagement in mathematical sciences and STEM. During the visit, the teams exchanged updates on advances in integrating satellite data, including crop area maps and seasonal-to-sub seasonal weather forecasts, into in-season crop yield models. They also reflected on goals of collaborating with and strengthening institutional capacity in Ghana and Senegal.
