NASA’s Geospatial Foundation Model Featured on the American Geophysical Union (AGU) TV Series

During the annual AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco, CA from 12/11-16/23, IMPACT and IBM’s Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (AI) Foundation Model (FM) was a featured film at the conference event. The film was broadcasted on multiple screens in high visibility areas throughout the conference center and viewable at delegate hotels on select channels. The film highlighted the collaboration between IMPACT and IBM on the creation of an AI FM using NASA’s Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) dataset for use within Earth observation applications. The model was publicly released to the AI community in August 2023 on Hugging Face and has been cited in several papers since the release and was used by 2023 NASA Space Apps Challenge participants during the event in October 2023.

The video featured NASA Chief Science Data Officer, Kevin Murphy, MSFC Earth Scientists, Manil Maksey and Pontus Oloffson (see images below), IBM Principal Research Scientist, Raghu Ganti, and UAH Research Scientist, Chris Phillips.
