MSFC-Earth Science researchers hosted scientists and engineers from the University of Bergen and Naval Research Laboratory for integration and testing of the ALOFT Instrument Rack. The ALOFT instrument suite observes lightning signatures in radio frequency, UV-NIR, and gamma-ray emission from the NASA ER-2 High Altitude Laboratory. The Airborne Lightning Observatory for Fly's Eye Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) Simulator (FEGS) and Terrestrial Gamma ray Flashes (TGF) (ALOFT) campaign will utilize a suite of instruments to observe thunderstorms in the tropics with coordinated ground observations to study the physics of lightning and TGFs and their relationship to underlying cloud processes.
