The Airborne Data Management Group (ADMG) Aids NASA Management Address Records Stored at the Federal Records Center

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) San Francisco Federal Records Center (FRC) in San Bruno contains data records from the NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) shipped to the FRC for storage starting as early as the 1960s. The Airborne Data Management Group within NASA IMPACT was called to aid with dispositioning the contents from over 30 records transfers. Most of the contents consisted of large metal film cans containing rolls of high resolution 9” x 9” or 9” x 18” photos taken primarily from the NASA ER-2 aircraft flights like those recently sent to NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) for digitization and public release. ADMG member, Deborah Smith, worked with subject matter experts at ARC to determine these were the original film cans of the copies previously transferred to JSC. Discovery of these cans ensures the collection will be completely digitized (the cans at JSC may have suffered from improper storage and could be damaged). The FRC records not pertaining to the aerial film have been referred to the NASA Ames Archivist for determination. Without the ADMG as a resource, vital records such as these could have been slated for disposal based on lack of information.
