SERVIR Participates in National Adaptation Plans (NAP) Expo 2023

SERVIR joined the eighth annual NAP Expo held in Santiago, Chile, 3/27-30/23, participating under the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and its regional AmeriGEO delegation. NAP Expo is an annual outreach event organized by the Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG) with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Multiple governmental bodies, public, and private organizations participated in the event to promote the exchange of experiences and foster partnerships on how to advance National Adaptation Plans (NAPs).

Thanks to SERVIR Amazonia regional hub consortium partner Ecociencia, one of its strategic partners in Ecuador, SERVIR helped to showcase the Earth observation component used by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition (MATEE) during its NAP formulation and the constant commitment from SERVIR with the Ministry for the advancement in the use of GEO Global Water Sustainability (GEOGLoWS) services as an early warning system augmenting the forecasting capabilities of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Institute of Ecuador (INAMHI), an organization attached to the Ministry.

During the GEO session “Preparing for Adaptation with Earth Observation in Latin America Region” SERVIR SCO member Natalia Bermudez provided some examples of Earth observations-enabled adaptation within an InterAmerican network, presenting NASA and SERVIR services for forecasting Seasonal to Sub-Seasonal Fire and Drought in the Amazon and also AmeriGEO success stories from Costa Rica. SERVIR was also invited to join a session organized by the Adaptation Committee on engaging the private sector to accelerate adaptation planning and implementation. Natalia Bermudez in the company of the GEO Secretary of Climate, Sara Venturini, was able to present on the involvement of private initiatives in multiple services.
