Organization and Participation in the Lunar Surface Science Workshop (LSSW): Candidate Artemis 3 Landing Site

Renee Weber (ST01) and Michael Zanetti (ST13) were workshop organizers and session chairs for The First Steps in a Bold New Era of Human Discovery: Candidate Artemis III Landing Sites - Lunar Surface Science Workshop (LSSW)- 4/4-5/23 (https://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/Artemis_III_2023/technical_program/). The aim of the workshop was to solicit scientific community input on regions and features of interest at the Lunar South Pole for Artemis 3 Landing Sites. Highlights included insights from new Mini-RF Radar data (processed by Caleb Fassett, formerly Heliophysics and Planetary Science Branch), the presence and accessibility of water ice, and geologic complexity and variability at the 13 proposed landing sites from the Artemis Definition Team.

Weber chaired the session on Regional Trends for the Artemis South Polar Exploration Zone (4/4/23); Zanetti chaired Science On and From the Moon (4/4/23), Faustini Landing Zone (4/5/23), and Haworth and DeGerlache-Kocher Massif Landing Zone. Zanetti also moderated a lengthy discussion with Sen. Dr. Harrison “Jack” Schmidt, Apollo 17 lunar module pilot and only geologist to walk on the Moon.
