Harmonized LandSat Sentinel-2 (HLS) Data Featured in a Weather.com Article on California’s Rising Water Reservoirs

A recent article by IBM-owned The Weather Company used HLS data to show before/after images of 8 California reservoirs that have seen surges in water levels from the extreme precipitation the state has seen this year. HLS enables high-fidelity time series by creating a dataset that allows imagery from multiple NASA (Landsat) and ESA (Sentinel-2) satellites to be used interchangeably for analysis. The writer credits HLS and NASA WorldView for the imagery used in the time series, showing a use case for online access to free and open NASA data. The article goes on to explain the significance of the water reservoirs exceeding annual averages prior to historic snowpack melting expected in the coming months.
