Airborne Data Management Group (ADMG) Facilitates Recovery and Digitization of historical Air Photos from Several NASA Aircraft

The airborne science program reached out Deborah Smith (ST11) who leads the ADMG to assist with an urgent recovery of over 500 cans containing rolls of high resolution 9” x 9” or 9” x 18” photos taken primarily from the NASA ER-2 aircraft flights during the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s. There are also photos from the C-130 and the WB-57 aircraft. The cans have been stored for 20 years in a warehouse at NASA Ames slated to be torn down this past spring.

Through coordination with multiple parties, including folks at NASA Ames Research Center in Palo Alto, CA, JSC in Houston, and NASA Headquarters, Ms. Smith devised a plan to transfer the cans to JSC for digitization.  NASA Earth Science Data Systems has funded physical transfer and digitization efforts.  The cans have left for JSC this week.  ADMG is also in contact with the National Archive and Records Association (NARA) to determine any requirements for the cans after digitization is completed. The photos will next be assigned to a NASA DAAC for public distribution once digitization is completed.
