Commercial SmallSat Data Analysis Proposal Selected

A 2-year proposal, led by Jordan Bell (ST11), will focus on the use of freely available Earth observations and data from the Commercial Smallsat Data Acquisition program to identify, map, and analyze hail and wind damage swaths was recently selected. The 2022 ROSES proposal entitled "Routine Mapping of Damaged Agricultural Crops Caused by Severe Weather Using Commercial High-Resolution Imagery" will focus on expanding the Hail and Wind Damage Swath (HWDS) database to include information about remote sensing observations to build time series of the database entries, develop an algorithm that uses the time series from the Earth observations to map the impacts to agricultural crops, and the final objective will automate this damage mapping algorithm in an attempt to map HWDSs in a near real time setting. Co-Is include Andrew Molthan (ST11) and Kaylee Sharp (ST11/UAH), and Alex Melancon (ST11/UAH). Hannah Pankratz (UAH/ST11) is a collaborator. The project should kick off in early FY2024.
