SERVIR Science Coordination Office (SCO) Team Members Support SERVIR Amazonia Activities in Ecuador and Peru

On April 6 through 13, Helen Parache and Vanesa Martin of the SERVIR SCO traveled to Quito, Ecuador, and Lima, Peru, to meet with SERVIR Amazonia members Conservacion Amazonica (ACCA) and EcoCiencia, and with SERVIR-Amazonia Chief of Party, Carlos Gasco (CIAT) and Science and Data Lead, Brian Zutta (Spatial Informatics Group). They also supported Jim Nelson’s Applied Sciences Team (AST) meetings with stakeholders, including INAMHI (National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, Ecuador), SENAMHI (National Meteorology and Hydrology Service of Peru), and CONGOPE (Consortium of Autonomous Provincial Governments of Ecuador).

Nelson provided a talk in Quito, “Improving Resilience and Reducing Risk of Extreme Hydrological Events through the application of Earth observations and in situ monitoring and its presentation in the Tethys platform. Perspectives from the SERVIR-Amazonia Program and their implementation in Ecuador, directed to hydrology specialists to promote exchange of experiences, methodologies and tools. In addition, the team met with USAID-Peru. The first AST and SCO trip to the Amazon region, outcomes from this trip included a way forward for service implementation and tech transfer for Nelson’s service, a platform for continuity between Nelson and  Jorge Luis Sanchez, hired by CIAT to continue to support the service, and strengthened relationships between the SCO and regional consortium members.
