IMPACT’s Airborne Data Management Group (ADMG) Presents CASEI in the Classroom

On March 2, 2022, Shelby Bagwell (UAH) and Danielle Groenen (UAH) presented the Catalog of Archived Suborbital Earth Science Investigations (CASEI) knowledge portal to an Introduction to GIS class of thirteen undergraduate students at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). The ADMG team, including graduate student Lucia Alonso Guzman, and undergraduate student Jillian Ethridge, both of UAH, designed the interactive lesson with course instructor Megan Sirbaugh, and showcased NASA airborne observations and NASA student opportunities, including the Student Airborne Research Program (SARP). The CASEI website is in beta and contains key contextual metadata for over 71 NASA airborne and field campaigns, including details about platforms, instruments, and deployments. During the classroom activity, students explored the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) field campaign using CASEI, linked from CASEI to download permafrost and elevation data, and finished their assignment with a visualization of the permafrost data in ArcGIS Pro.
