Chandra Featured in Marshall Star 2021 Year-in-Review

Chandra’s discovery release “Chandra adds Data, Raises New Questions about Extraordinary Magnetar.”  was featured in the Marshall Star 2021 Year in Review of 01/05/22.  In 2020, astronomers added a fascinating new object to an exclusive family of exotic phenomena with the discovery of a powerful magnetar. Now, observations made using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory add credence to the theory that it’s also a pulsar – a compact, spinning star which emits powerful pulses of electromagnetic radiation. Magnetars – highly dense neutron stars formed from the collapsed core of stars gone supernova – are unique among neutron stars for possessing the most powerful known magnetic fields in the universe. Marshall manages the Chandra program for NASA.
