SERVIR-Amazonia Launches Deforestation Monitoring Tool

On 9/21/21, SERVIR-Amazonia held a virtual launch event for TerraOnTrack. Remarks were provided by Marina Piatto (Executive Director, Imaflora), Catherine Hamlin (Environment Office Director, USAID Brazil), Eric Anderson (NASA SERVIR, Associate Chief Scientist), and Carlos Gasco (SERVIR-Amazonia Chief of Party, Alliance Bioversity-CIAT).

TerraOnTrack (for the Increase the Protection of Forests Managed by Community-Based Initiatives in the Brazilian Amazon Service) is a web application that enables traditional communities and indigenous people to quickly identify potential threats to their territories and monitor illegal activities on the ground. The application provides Earth observation-based alerts on deforestation from University of Maryland’s Global Analysis and Discovery (GLAD) and the Real-Time System for Detection of Deforestation (DETER) from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) as well as fire alerts from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). In addition, communities are able to create their own spatially explicit alerts. An expected outcome of the tool is enhanced capacity for communities to monitor and manage their territories. 94 people attended the launch of TerraOnTrack, and after the launch there were 341 views of a related video produced by Imaflora.
