SERVIR Representative Participates in Planet Explore! Conference

On 4/13/23, Emil Cherrington from the SERVIR Science Coordination Office participated in a panel discussion during Planet’s annual Planet Explore! Conference, which was held in Washington, DC, from 4/12-13/23. In addition to SERVIR representation, the panel also featured the participation of representatives from Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) of Norway, the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Resources Institute (WRI).  Cherrington spoke about experiences across the broader SERVIR network utilizing Planet data that have been made publicly accessible through a partnership with Norway's International Climate and Forests Initiative (NICFI). Specifically, he spoke about how SERVIR hubs have integrated the Planet data into their various ongoing geospatial services, such as the Collect Earth Online platform and the Regional Land Cover Monitoring System implemented by the SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) and SERVIR Southeast Asia hubs. In addition to these applications of the Planet / NICFI data, he highlighted that Planet data is also being used by US-based researchers accessing the data under NASA’s Commercial Smallsat Data Acquisition (CSDA) Program.
