Mission Concept Review (MCR) – NASA Earth System Observatory’s Surface Biology and Geology Mission

Surface Biology Geology (SBG) mission successfully passed the Mission Concept Review held at JPL 6/22-24/22. Jeffrey Luvall (ST11) served on the Research and Applications steering committee along with representatives from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Goddard Space Flight Center in co-leading mission concept development. Luvall is also co-leading the Applications Working Group (APPWG) for the mission.  SBG Project Authorization Letter (PAL) required the applications community assessment report (CAR) to be completed for the MCR.  Luvall was responsible for leading the development of the CAR and presented the SBG Applications Working Group’s CAR to the review panel. Next key milestone for SBG is the Key Decision Point-A (KPD-A) in October. SBG is NASA’s first mission that is being developed under the 2016 “Directive on Project Applications Program”. This directive guides the implementation of a Project Applications Program within the Earth Science Division for NASA’s Earth Observation missions.
