SERVIR Science Coordination Office (SCO) Provides Remote Sensing Virtual Training as Part of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Capacity Building for Bhutan

SERVIR provided a two-day training of trainers (ToT) workshop in Bhutan on Fundamentals of Remote Sensing (RS) and Introduction to Google Earth Engine (GEE), as part of SERVIR’s Advancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math in Bhutan through Increased Earth Observation Capacity, a multi-year STEM activity through an Interagency Agreement with the US Department of State.

Timothy Mayer, Filoteo Gomez Martinez and Meryl Kruskopf of the SERVIR Science Coordination Office were trainers for the online workshop held November 28 and 29, 2021, with training content addressing recommendations received from the partners: Department of Agriculture (DoA), Ugyen Wangchuck for Conservation Environmental Research (UWICER), and National Plant Protection Center (NPPC).

There were 64 participants registered for the workshop (47 men and 17 women)—with some participants attended the training on shared computers or participating in groups. The majority of the participants were from Bhutan DoA, UWICER, and NPPC, but the training also included participants from Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) Bhutan, Bhutan Foundation, and one independent consultant, as well. The ToT format aims to further participants’ knowledge in the process and applications of EO data and enable them to transfer this knowledge to others.
